Artmarket & Hepworth. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

Thank you to all who showed an interest in my work @ the Artmarket last weekend. I am starting to make a selection of Kimonos to sell next year so instead of having one displayed at shows in view to taking commissions, I will have stock there and then.
I am pleased to have been asked to show my work at the Hepworth market this Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th 10am-4pm. This will be my final show this year; I hope to see you there.
It has been an exciting year, starting with my work being shown in Selvedge magazines shop window for a month in the Spring, taking part in a dual city print and weave course in Istanbul and London with Mimar Sinan University and Central Saint Martins, being invited to show my work at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair, The Artmarket and The Hepworth. In the new year I will be introducing my new shop online, building stock of areas of my work to avoid disappointment at shows and I will lead a series of workshops.

 identity
  1. 1.
the fact of being who or what a person or thing is.

    • Since my return from Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul.I have created a new collection.
  2. The work is a continuation of The Beauty Of Poor Materials; the title for my final collection presented at the end of my degree, at New Designers in Islington and Selvedge magazine's shop window London. As I  take time to reflect on my journey through life, starting out as an adopted baby I have become fascinated by IDENTITY... WHAT MAKES US WHO WE ARE?

  3. For many years my love of finding what are commonly regarded as poor materials, fabrics that have been rejected, the discarded and the overlooked has grown. I over dye, stitch, weave and embroider my finds to create textiles to desire and cherish. My current pieces are numbered with a patch to give them an Identity. They are distinguished as a piece of me and a part of who I have become as an individual artist and designer. © 2015 Kate Whitehead

Istanbul-London Dual City Course From Central Saint Martins and Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

I  have collected new life stories to share from the Istanbul-London Dual City Course Central Saint Martins and Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.
London and Istanbul are among the world's oldest and richest cities in terms of heritage and historical sites. Their global appeal is booming, with artists and designers keen to experience the beguiling mix of both the ancient and modern styles of these vibrant metropolises. My print Taksim Square Istanbul.

Kabak. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

Kabak doesn't have a sufficient population to be designated as a "village", Kabak is officially a neighbourhood of Uzunyurt in the Turkish mountains. I recently spent two weeks there prior to doing a dual city course at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University a
Turkish state university located in the Fındıklı neighborhood of Ä°stanbul where i studied Print and Central Saint Martins London where i studied weave. I enjoyed a flip floppy time in Kabak and learned a lot about the local textiles.

He wishes for the Cloths of Heaven

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
   But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
   I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Indigo Blues. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

I am going to Turkey in June, to spend two weeks on the coast for a much deserved break. Then I will travel to Mimar Sinan University Of Fine Arts in Istanbul to print for a few days, before I fly back to London to weave at Central Saint Martins. I am looking forward to searching for interesting yarns and fabrics on my trip. Yesterday was a perfect day to run an Indigo workshop. I used my new dye vat to dye some of my own fabric and string.

Fragment. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

I am determined to draw more often. I find it easier to seek a quiet spot outside especially now Spring is here, away from every day distractions. My friend Kin Lee http://www.kinleeart.com/ paints plein air using oils. I enjoyed finding this fragment of Blue and White pottery to use in my doodle with ink and water colour pencils.

Indigo. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

    indiˈɪndɪgəʊ/
  1. indigo
    ˈɪndɪgəʊ/
    noun
    1. 1.
a tropical plant of the pea family, which was formerly widely cultivated as a source of dark blue dye.
    2. 2.
the dark blue dye obtained from the indigo plant.

indigo is the natural dye I have used the most this year.  Tinctorium  ran an Indigo workshop alongside the Boro exhibition at Somerset House. Although I have used Indigo to Over dye found, discarded and Vintage fabrics to use in my weave, it was a great space to take part in a work shop instead of running them myself.

Boro Threads Of Life. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

My love of Boro was the inspiration for my final collection at uni and continues to influence my textiles. I spent two happy hours at the Threads Of Life exhibition at Somerset House in April taking photographs and sketchingboro  translated to ‘rags’ in English, boro is the collective name for items – usually clothing and bed covers – made by the poor, rural population of Japan who could not afford to buy new when need required and had to literally make ends meet by piecing and patching discarded cotton onto existing sets, forming something slightly different each time they did so. Generations of Japanese families repaired and recycled fishermen’s jackets to futon covers, handing them down to the next and weaving their own sagas and stories through the threads.
