TextielMuseum Tilburg Holland - Fiber futures

TextielMuseum
Fiber Futures | Art from Japan
The TextielMuseum in Tilburg Nertherlands is a restored factory with a striking glass entrance, for industrial & designer textiles. I had the opportunity to visit this amazing space yesterday and saw the current Fiber futures Art from Japan exhibition,an inspiring collection.
3 October 2015 till 7 February 2016
This Autumn the
TextielMuseum presents ‘Fiber futures | Art from Japan’, a showcase of 30 Japanese artists at the cutting edge of the fibre-art scene. Covering wall hangings, sculptures, monumental installations, video and architecture, the works on display provide an understated, but at times exuberant picture of contemporary Japanese fibre art. All the featured artists, who include both newcomers and established names such as Jun’ichi Arai, Naomi Kobayashi and Reiko Sudō, use flexible materials that range from silk, washi paper, jute and hemp to steel wire, synthetic fibre and even recycled cocoons. Their methods show a deep respect for tradition as well as an openness to the latest weaving and dying technology.

Reflection

I am having a few days to rest & play after what has been an incredible creative journey so far this year, it is the first time I have stopped since March. Taking a bit of time to reflect and review, stepping back and taking stock. I am currently playing with ideas of how to push my creative practice forward and to focus on the areas I am happy with while enjoying some quiet time out. I have met some amazing talented designer makers along the way. A big thank you to all who have supported me, have stopped  by to say hello and have swapped their stories. There are new tiny beginnings appearing in my work for 2016.

HAND MADE IN ENGLAND. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

Phewww I have just finished my last creative stitch for my next show  the 'Made In England' stand MIE 1 @ The Festival Of Quilts @ The NEC.  There are a few days to go until it is time to set up my stand but I am taking a short break, before Summer whizzes past. There will just be enough time to pack, label, press and panic.
I would be lying if at times it hadn't crossed my mind to ship my designs and ideas abroad to have stock made cheaper and quicker than making, dyeing, embroidering and weaving each piece and sewing every stitch myself. Something always stops me, I think it is that I would know that I hadn't put my whole self into each piece. The downside is that the prices of my textile pieces reflect the time and effort I put in to my creative practice. The upside is I am very happy to have been chosen to exhibit on the 'Made In England' stand and delighted to have just received an email from Selvedge magazine which says they have chosen me to highlight the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Show 2015 in their September/October issue.KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate Whitehead

PENNY GRAY'S SELVEDGE SPRING FAIR NEW EXHIBITORS. KateWhiteheadTextiles‬ © 2015 Kate

PENNY GRAY’S  SELVEDGE SPRING FAIR NEW EXHIBITORS
 rebeccabrown

To say it’s been hectic organising Selvedge Spring Fairs in three different locations is something of an understatement but when everything comes together on the day it’s all worthwhile.  I’ll be at Chelsea from 8am helping everyone set up and I’m hoping to find time before take down at 5pm to run around and see the host of brand new exhibitors to the London event.

It might be a flying visit but I’m definitely going to stop by Rebecca Brown’s stall. She’s currently studying an MA in Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and her work is inspired by superstitions, worries, fears and old wives tales. She specialises in illustration but also works with a range of different surfaces and materials, including both ceramics and textiles. As a lover of ceramics I know I’ll  find it hard to resist Rebecca’s beautifully hand painted cups and saucers.

Another new face this year is Kate Whitehead who I met a while ago at New Designers and whose work filled the Selvedge shop window for a month last year. Kate is an artist and creative designer specialising in weave and embroidery. Look out for her hand woven shawls and wall hangings.

And lastly, I won’t miss Miriam Griffiths super cool and colourful knitwear. Designed and produced in her studio in Chesterfield all of her clothing is made from fine and natural materials. I’d love to add an extra layer to my Spring time wardrobe with one of Miriam’s lightweight jumpers – but I probably won’t have time to try anything on!
